Once a month, our therapist, Jess, has the opportunity to provide music therapy services at Sacred Heart Convent. Jess leads the group in singing familiar songs and discussions related to each song. All of the residents smile as they belt out their favorite tunes, socialize with one another, and share beautiful memories connected to the music. We are fully embracing all the fall things in our sessions here at MTC! One of Emma’s favorite fall songs to use is “Fall, Fall, Fall” by MTC’s own, Rachel Rambach! Mentioning fall themes from leaves changing colors, cooler temperatures, football, pumpkins, apples, and candy corn, this song is the perfect seasonal song to prep clients for all that fall brings. It also provides the opportunity to work on spelling the season word, F-A-L-L, and we like to incorporate some sign language while we spell too!

Our clients can express themselves and show what they have learned through creating their own music as well! We continue this discussion of music therapy methods, as Jess shares about compositional music therapy. One of the biggest benefits of composition, or songwriting, is that it gives clients the agency to express themselves in a way that they may not regularly get to do! Song writing can be customized to each person with different levels of supports, and music therapists can write songs to work on their client’s specific needs.
